Apparantly this is about to become a reality for millions of city dwellers in NSW courtesy of the State Government. According to the Premier, they are seeking ‘expressions of interest’ for the creation of free universal wireless broadband access in the CBD of several largish city areas.

This sounds like a wonderful idea… but I’ll be willing to bet as soon as he sees what happens when several million geeks descend on the access points totally sucking the internet dry of movies, porn and pirated software the plan will come to a screaming halt :) It almost sounds as if there is an electiuon coming… oh wait… there is??

Spent some of yesterday out Christmas Shopping. Started around 9:30 a.m…. finished around 3:30 p.m. when we went to get the kids from school. Take and hour out for coffe, lunch and afternoon tea and we spent 5 hours wandering around a shopping mall that’s new to us.

What did we buy? Well it’s hard to say. We had no clear plan to begin with as we have no idea *what* to get anyone… so as we wandered we just picked up what looked reasonable and stuck it in the trolley. The inevitable result was we spent a fortune… and next to nothing and have a completely unbalanced selection of gifts.

We need ‘balance’ in gift purchase… kids are dreadfully jealous about what the other receives. What’s worse, even if they get the same thing the other one always has a better version no matter what it is :D

Anyway. We’ve made a start… and once we’ve sat around and had another look at the stuff we can decide if and what we ought to get to sort out the potential issues before they arrive… we hope. Still have to get things for other people… lord knows what.

I know *I’m* ok… I got my PDA :) In addition I bought a phone card for one of our handsets so the oldies can use it to call use while they’re here. I have to configure the options on it as well, so I have enough to carry on with and keep me happy and occupied for months.

Time to start thinking about food again… bit of a pain since I’ll not be able to eat that much of it this year… and I’ve already filled the store cupboard with choccies, and the like. Bugger.

I’m really getting cynical in my old age. There was a time when a visit by a US President to a friendly state would be nothing to comment on other than to note how nice it was to receive a visit from a foreign dignitary.

Dubya finger

Well, I’m very aware there is little dignified about George Bush these days. The recent debacle of his election setbacks has left him a lame duck president… so what is the point of his visit?

Well for a start you have to recall that just a few short months ago the Israelis felt their hawkish relationship with Bush was so strong they could risk an invasion of Lebanon without censure from their strongest ally. Of course they failed to recover the soldier they ostensible invaded in order to rescue and had to retreat in ignominy having killed thousands of Lebanese civilians and caused billions of dollars of damage to the infrastructure for no good purpose… but who’s counting.

Well ‘who was counting’ was the American people who began to fear Bush was going to either invade, or allow to be invaded, more Middle Eastern countries with the accompanying heavy death toll of their sons, husbands and fathers.

So what happened? Amazingly, right out of the blue, Israel decides it will call for a ceae-fire with Lebanon. Not only that, even when they are shelled with rockets… they do not retaliate. What could have brought this sudden change of heart? Could it perhaps have something to do with Bush now having to deal with a non-compliant with the House of Reps?

Cynical moi? Shirley knot.

There I was quietly looking up what happened to the Nephilims… as one does occasionally… when I found a reference to the Illuminati… which in turn referred me to David Oick… sorry Icke.

David Icke

Not heard of David for some time. He used to be quite a pleasant feller to listen to on the radio or TV rabbiting on about sport… then suddenly he began spouting some less than interesting stories about some super race of alien beings who were controlling life (and society) as we know it.

At the time I pretty much dismissed it as rubbish so looked it over once again… and I must admit to not having changed my mind one bit. He’s nutty as a fruit cake!! On the other hand… I carry a frim conviction that Jesus was married to Mary (the Magdalene) and had at least one child before being executed… so maybe I’m as loopy as David is.

It’d be nice to think that when I croak I’ll find out if it’s all true… but I have this sneaking suspicion that when I die I’ll find out nothing… and not even retain enough consciousness to remember I was ever alive. Sad thought… but c’est las mort.

There is a little site in the states called Jesus Pets. This site proudly states that it’s mission is to help those christians who will be ‘called to glory’ when the rapture begins… but will be worried about who will take care of their pets when they are communing with god in the great hereafter.

I have no doubt this is a huge hoax… but the site makes a good convincing read. So for all you committed christians out there… or all you christians who ought to be committed… if you have pets, then this is the site for you.

Tonight’s excursion was to the Support Group Meeting at the local Girl Guides group. Not sure if I’ve mentioned this recently, but I got elected President (by default) last year and have been helping out as best I can on and off with whatever comes up… especially sausage sizzles :)

Guides

Lots of stuff going on… but luckily not much I can really help with.

The *main* problem other than the chronic shortage of funds, is a paucity of leaders. All the leaders are volunteers, and all the guides have parents… yet few if any of the current crop of parents are volunteering to be leaders. In fact there are only four or five regulars at the support group meetings… I’ve managed to miss the last three so I can’t be too critical of them.

But at least I do *go* and help where I can. At the last sausage sizzle we ran, we made $1,000 profit… without any help from the other parents at all. Not one turned up.

I’m not sure what can be done about this. Trouble is I sympathise and identify entirely with them… I’m doing this under duress really… because the kids love guiding and I want to do my best for them. BNut given the choice I’d stay home.

So… what to do. Lay a major guilt trip on people? That just may drive them away. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

We sat through several hours of ice skating yesterday as the girls went through the dress rehearsal for their show. The lights were on full so we didn’t get the full picture… and some of the performers were a little ‘shaky’ so they have yet another dress rehearsal on Thursday as well.

Girls on Ice

The picture shows them in their finery. A friend made the skirts, and the wife sewed on the sequins… and she really enjoyed every second of it… not :)

They have the full performances to look forward to. One on Friday… one on Saturday. I’ll be ok… sitting wrapped up in a skiing jacket up in the stand as it all flows by me. The wife on the other hand ‘volunteered’ to help out with the costume changes as there are dozens of kids all needing to be shepherded onto and off the ice for their turns.

This means she won’t see the actual show… so you say that’s ok, no worries… just video it.

Well I *would* if I was allowed… but it seems the parents aren’t allowed to video their kids any more… not sure why… probably because of all the pervs out there… or maybe the rink just wants to turn a profit. Who knows. But we can’t take stills either… in fact they got upset when I wanted to take a photo of the kids with Father Christmas… is this political correctness got out of hand or what?

Anyway… they’ll be selling us a DVD which I’m sure will *not* concentrate as much on our kids as we’d like (if at all). I’m considering trying to sneak in the video to see if I can film them anyway… so long as I don’t get caught of course. :)

Well they had a bit of a last minute smash but the final English charge was nowhere near enough to stop the Aussie bowlers who creamed the rest of the England team in under the 25 overs needed to prevent spectators claiming a refund.

As it happens the Barmy Army made more noise than their team. Let’s hope they pick the pace up a bit in the next few matches.

Each year the same problem… what the hell to buy people? Our circle has shrunk so much now that apart from the oldies, there are really only kids to buy for… ours and friends. Still I have no idea what anyone wants… or needs… so I tend to go out and take pot luck.

Right now I have *no* idea what to buy the oldies. Last year we got them a video camera… but this year?? Drawing a blank so far. It has to be large enough to be worth having… but small enough for them to transport back. Suggestions would be appreciated :)

For the kids… well they’ll have to take pot luck. They already have everything and anything they could reasonably want… though various hints have been made for totally impracticable stuff like motor bikes… or ponies!! Will have to wander about and see what’s there.

For the wife… well here I’m doing ok (I think). I’ve been saving a few dollars here and there all year for something… and I think I have enough to buy it. No idea if she wants it… or will like it… but what do you give someone who already has everything they want?

Either way… I hope it’ll be a pleasant surprise – and that I don’t get hit with it instead!!

One more week and the oldies will be arriving. Just around now we’ll be setting off for the airport ready to collect them for their three month stay. Are we ready? No, Will we be ready? No. Are we concerned? No. :)

The bedroom will be tidy… the shower and toilet will be clean and ready for use. More than that… well I’m messy by nature unfortunately so we’ll just have to cope with it. I do try to organise myself and put things where they should be… but it ain’t gonna happen. I’ve lived my entire life with a flakey mind, and I honestly can’t see things changing at this late state.

Some things I still have to do though… for example pump up the tyres on the wheelchair or it’ll not be going anywhere! Also… the toilet might be clean but the seat is falling off and needs rescrewing… if it will still work. Might be faster and easier to just go get a new one.

Garden… don’t talk about the garden… still in a dreadful state overgrown and scruffy… a real mess :) but the oldies like to sit by the pool and watch the toys floating around and that area is fairly clean already so polishing it up isn’t an urgent task.

The barbecue… well I’ve not used it since it caught fire last time we used it… so needs looking at… with a sandblaster… that will take a bit of working on.

So… other than cleaning…it’s all downhill from here really… we sit and wait… and prepare… and wait :)
