More on Maps

Google Maps aren’t the only offering out there of course… just the easiest to get to.
Another offering is the experimental setup at Flash Earth which carries access to all major map and satellite image sites including Google, Microsoft and NASA which updates its shots daily, but has lower resolution!
Currently the NASA shots show Sydney covered [...]

Google maps

Just been looking at a few places I know on Google Maps… like my own house of course
It’s a great improvement on what it was originally, helped by both my computer and internet connection haveing improved. In the recent past it took ages for pages to render and even then quality was [...]

Clickety clack front and back

Spent the larger part of the day out in the garden. It looked like rain so I thought I’d get it done before we had a downpour and it grew even more dangerous than it already was… it’s a jungle out there!
Of course… after spending the day rushing about chopping the edges and [...]

C’mon back to my Adobe.

Was reading Wired today and got led to an Adobe site where I found this picture…

… which has to be one of the oddest logos I’ve ever seen.
Why on *earth* would someone think a gap toothed tattooed weirdo was a suitable logo for a site about design? Maybe if I was a designer I’d appreciate [...]

Neighbours move upmarket

Beitish media mogul Michael Grade has made a bizarre move on the ailing relationship between the Beeb and the long running Aussie soapie “Neighbours”. Lord knows why but this tedious ongoing saga of dysfunctional families and social misfits is being sought by ITV with an offer price of $275,000 per episode!
The BBC who have been [...]

Dave Allen - still missed.

I liked Dave Allen, he was a wonderful comedian. One of my favourite jokes is a really short one and goes something like this:
I was walking down the road in a small town when a funeral passed by. I turned to a local and asked “Who’s dead?”. He looked at me and said “The man [...]

Gawd they start young!

Daughters party is in full swing… sort of. The wife asked me a couple of times to ferry food up to their room at the far end of the house. I went once but then decided I wasn’t going back again.
Last time she went in the wife said that was probably a wise move… they’d [...]

The parents - an update.

The oldies will be leaving these hallowed shores at the end of May, early June. Dad has had a sniff of an offer off a local company who’re expanding to the UK but they might well not contact him until he’s returned to the UK… but still… we live in hope. The real hope of [...]

Daughter’s birthday!

The daughter is now officially eleven… and I feel ten years older.
Because she is in school today and the old man wasn’t intending to get up early for anything, he decided it would be a good idea to give her her pressie from him and the old lady last night. Being a meanie I suggested [...]

Children of Hurin.

Bought my copy - more later.

It approaches… the end of the SMH as we know it!!

Fairfax newspapers have decreed that the era of the ‘broadsheet’ newspaper is over. Soon all the remaining broadsheets will be converted to tabloid format… or be closed down.
Personally I far and away prefer to broadsheet format to tabloid. That extra area of newsprint is so much better for presentation of serious news. Ok there are [...]

Janice who?

Caught a promo for some modelling show on Foxtel the earlier tonight and up popped some reference to “the famous Janice Dickenson”. I had the idea she was one of these people famous in their own minds and nowhere else. Then I looked her up on google images… and discovered I was right.,, more or [...]

Back to school - just.

For some reason unknown to me, our kids school has chosen today as the return after the Easter break. It isn’t a general thing. Some schools returned Monday, others Tuesday… ours on Thursday. So they are there today and tomorrow… and then it’s the weekend. Hardly seems worth it really!
The eldest is excited either way. [...]

Contemn? Damn right!

I was discussing with my father the Laurence Binyon stanza used repeatedly at memorials for the fallen service personell of whatever war or conflict they fought and or died in. I used the stanza in its exact format and spelling, i.e. :
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not [...]

From the sublime to the ridiculous.

We’ve had an epiphany… or something. Either way we now have a clear, clean boring, uninteresting… oops… err… very readable typeface and layout. I hope this will reduce the whinges about the look and feel of the place.
Well it might do until I can find some other wacky way out theme to install
Eitehr [...]

There are times I’m a pedantic bastard.

Reading the Phantom’s comment on ‘Soup Glorious Soup’ reminded me of one of my pet peeves. Something I rant on about constantly is sloppy grammar in speech. And of all the culprits, the ones that *really* set me off are news reports that make no sense. Typically of course, right at this moment I can’t [...]

ANZAC Day… we will remember.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Laurence Binyon - For The Fallen (1914)

Feedback please?

The blog looks fantastic on a 22″ widescreen monitor… but I have no idea what it looks like on a smaller standard screen.
Some feedback on the appearance would be appreciated… please?

Death by legal torture?

Gosh… it turns out that capital punishment by lethal injection appears to be even *more* “cruel and unusual than anyone thought. You can read the full story here.

Basically it appears that the drugs used to sedate the condemned before the lethal cocktail is injected quite often doesn’t work. In fact, the situation is so bad [...]

Tattoo?

On the way to the station the wife was querying the origins of the word tattoo and where the practice originated. I thought it was common in the stone age… but she thought it might have required metal so perhaps might have originated in the iron age.
A Wikipedia article says the word tatoo is a [...]
