Anyone wondering what happened yesterday… basically nothing much. I just forgot to post :(

One little thing… the eldest took her ‘plates’ out when we stopped for lunch and left them behind when we finished – probably because we were all reading (again) the Harry Potter series getting ready for the next film and then the last book.

Nevertheless, when we went back to ask if they’d kept them they said they’d not seen them… which means $800+ has gone down the chutes… literally. Grrr…..

Yes… I’ve been sucked back into the magical world of Harry Potter… if it hasn’t become obvious. I’ve been re-reading the books, watching the movies (as bad as most of them have been) and chatting away on the alt.fan.harry-potter newsgroup.

I really don’t have enough time to be doing this, but maybe it’s just some escapism taking place to avoid my humdrum boring life and plunge myself into another virtual world where it’s all going on, but there’s no real danger. Who knows.

For anyone who’s never been a part of usenet or just fancies reading one of the hundreds of thousands of newsgroups out there, you can either access them via a dedicated newsreader (and news server) as I do with a program called Agent… or you can get at them via Google Groups which I’ve linked the newsgroup names to.

Personally I think you lose a lot using Google Groups… but if you just want to look or maybe post one or two messages it’s there for you.

If you use Agent (there *is* a free version!!) then you need to know the name of your ISP news server, or pay for access to a private one (do a Google search… there are lots out there).

If you feel like visiting alt.fan-harry-potter and joining in the fun… please do. :)

Rumor, or Rumour depending on where you live, abound about the final book in the Harry Potter series, i.e. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”. I started compiling a list of the most prevalent ones I’ve seen or heard so far and written a ‘page’ listing them.

The page is accessed at top right so if you have any interest in Harry and his doings, please have a look… and add your own favourite theory/theories if I’ve missed it/them out! :)

Enjoy… just 29 days to go!!

With one of the stars of The Simple Life already behind bars (Paris Hilton) we are now watching the other part of the duo beginning *her* court case for driving whilst drinking.

Nicole Ritchie

Nicole Ritchie is up in court for a second time on a DUI charge. This time she’s facing a mandatory 90 day jail term, and bearing in mind what happened to her friend, is unlikely to get off this time.

From accounts I’ve read, public opinion has turned well against the airhead bimbo brigade who seem to think that because they are ‘celebrities’ they can flout any and all of society’s rules. This is a mistaken premise and they are about to learn that the hard way.

I feel more sorry for Nicole than Paris because her start in life was far harder… nevertheless she *has* lived a lifestyle most of us will never attain and she needs to learn that with privilege comes responsibility.

Still… I hope she copes better than Paris (who seemed to have a total breakdown in prison)… and comes back a new person with a new ethic.

Watched a one hour film last night that was made back in 1981. It was called ‘Women of the Sun’ and told part of the tale of European settlement of South Eastern Australia. It’s one of a four part series documenting the effects on aboriginal culture of the invasion.. especially the females.

This first part I saw was called ‘Alinta the Flame’ and was of course totally predictable in as much as it was clear all the way through what was going to happen, yet as obvious as it was, in the end it was almost hypnotic watching the events that led from an almost idyllic existence to the final scene of slaughter.

The film itself was clearly dated in technique. The acting… understandably… left a lot to be desired… yet it *was* worth watching if only to remind us what other people lost when the country was invaded. The blurb on one site I visited related the films history as follows:

Comprising four separate one-hour episodes on two tapes, WOMEN OF THE SUN examines the lives of four Aboriginal women. The first story is set in the 1820s, the second in the 1890s, the third in the 1930s and the last in the 1980s. This drama series, made in 1981, won the United Nations Media Peace Prize and the Banff Grand Prix in 1983. In Australia, where it was screened by SBS and subsequently by the ABC, it won two Awgies and five Penguin Awards.

If you’re interested the film there is more to be read here (which is where I copied the paragraph above). There is also a study guide to the film on PDF format which is also quite interesting.

We’d all like some… me especially. As regulars know last year I tried to sort out some online finance only to have the bank account hacked twice and lost all the profits… which sort of put me off it. However, one source of income has continued to trickle a few dollars in here and there until it mounted up to a reasonable sum… certainly not one to complain over… and that was from Google Adsense.

Simple enough concept. You put Google ads on your site. People see things that interest them, and click on them. You get paid on a ‘per click’ basis. Easy as eh?

True you don’t make a fortune unless you have thousands of regular visitors.. with a lot who remember to click on your ads… but still it *is* an income of sorts. Thing is you aren’t supposed to *ask* people to click. If you do you contravene the terms and conditions which could result in your account… and funds… being frozen!

So what am I rambling on about? Well… I’d really appreciate it if you would visit one of the other sites… especially Talk Tidy or The Online Dictionary of Slang and see if any of the ads interest you enough to click on them. If you could spare 30 secs of your online time doing that it’d be much appreciated… it might only be 10c a time but it mounts up slowly.

There’s an old rhyme that goes along the lines of…

Whether the weather be cold
Whether the weather be hot
We’ll weather the weather
Whatever the weather
We’ll weather it like it or not.

Over the past few days we’ve been getting some severe dissonance caused by the appearance of some wild and woolly weather patterns. We’ve had floods, snow, hail, gales etc… normal for other parts of the world but missing from NSW for the best part of 15 years so came as a bit of a surprise.

The dissonance is caused by the desperate need we have for water and for the dams to be filled, contrasted with the damage the floods have caused and the ongoing misery of the cold and rain. Even us British born whingers aren’t used to these conditions any more :)

The major storm predicted for last night didn’t eventuate luckily because, it seems. there was some sort of ‘inversion’ (whatever that is) over the Sydney basin but today the forecast is for that to change as we’re expecting high winds soon. Along with the wind of course comes rain… but for those along the coast will come 5 – 8 metre surf so they might be in for a few problems!

The kids will be in school, and their school is both on a hill, *and* heavily wooded all through so they’ll have to be careful. Me? Well I’ll be keeping a lookout for falling trees… and hunkering down in my dugout until the power goes and I can’t play online any more :)

Still… winter won’t last long… a few more weeks and we’ll be again complaining about the heat and the drought.

The world famous QE2, once the pride of the fleet, has finally been sold off to become a ‘floating hotel’ to be moored off the coast of the Palm Resort in Dubai.

The Cunard ship which has sailed the world since 1969 has been sold for US$100 million and will no doubt be affectionately remembered by millions… even those who never sailed in her. Apart from her history of a cruise ship, she also saw active service in the Falklands War where she served as a troop ship.

Let’s hope she remains a tourist attraction for many years and doesn’t suffer the same fate as some others of her ilk and go down in a sheet of flame or be broken up for scrap!

Interesting little site this… I wouldn’t call it 100% legal… but no doubt has its uses. Parakazanin seems to specialise in knock-offs and may well have viruses and/or Trojans on some of its downloads – I wouldn’t know. However, there *are* some damn fine programs on there in amongst the dross so if you feel brave and have some good protection maybe you’d want to browse their files.

Might be worthwhile… or might wreck your computer… you decide :)

Spent the morning re-reading some of Harry Potter “Goblet of Fire’ ready for the new book in a few weeks and then watched Aeon Flux for the first time. Story was a bit banal and predictable but the CGI and special effects made the film a stand out :)

I liked it anyway.

And yes in the end I did do *something*… I vacuumed downstairs… felt a bit guilty after spending the morning relaxing :)
