Yet again this morning I realised I’d mislaid the PDA. Naturally panic ensued as I tried to recall just where the hell I could have left it.

Turned out to be lying next to the bed.

I realised once I’d found it what had happened. Yesterday morning (Sunday), whilst we were having a well overdue lie-in, the idiot dog (Stupid) decided to jump on me. In so doing it got its front leg caught up in my cpap tube and almost pulled my face off :) In the process the PDA must have fallen off since it was standing on the machine. It’s really useful since I not only use it as our morning alarm… but also use it as a torch at night if I have to wander off to the loo. It’s really bright!!

So, it needed a quite soft reboot and away it went. Currently it’s plugged in charging quietly.

I like my PDA :)

Pleased to say that none of the people listed in the Obituaries column of the Telegraph (UK version) or The Times was know to me. Let’s hope it stays that way!

I suppose I knew of Kurt Waldheim but he never figured large on my radar once it become obvious he was never going to be tried for war crimes.

Kurt Waldheim

I wish I’d met Christiane Sourvinou-Inwood tho. She looked as if she was somebody special.

After not having bothered to try for years, we finally decided to record some of our DV tapes onto the computer. This was brought on by me having filmed the eldest at a school play which was performed entirely in French and having one of the other parents ask me for a copy.

Wonderful idea I thought even tho it wasn’t the best of recordings… except that the camera insists on FireWire as it’s method of choice for data transfer. Again a wonderful idea… FireWire is quite fast and suits the purpose… except of course that none of the computers come with a native FireWire port. Grrr…

So I nip up to my ‘store’ of computer bits and pieces and spend an hour rummaging through box after box of stuff. I found the connection wire easily enough… it was in a bag marked ‘FireWire’ so was sort of obvious. The port however was a different issue. Seems I have no expansion cards with FireWire on them.

However… I recalled eventually that back in the dim distant past… well 2 or 3 years ago… I bought a FireWire PCMCIA card for the old lappie . So I delved even *further* back into the piles of junk and eventually I found it tucked away in yet another set of boxes… along with a USB 2 PCMCIA card… lord knows why I bought that tho. Might come in handy tho so I brought it down just in case :)

Currently I’m occupied copying the video’s off the tape and onto the HDD and from there I’ll try to copy it to a DVD… and of course it’ll work perfectly. I refuse to believe (right now) that there will be anything to stop it recording… even though it’s never worked before :D

Hope springs eternal etc.

Us Pottermaniacs are waiting with bated breath for July.

In July we will see the release of the next in the film series of the books… Order of the Phoenix. The trailers are already looking *good* and I just learned it will be available on the iMax format… i.e. *huge* screen… with the last 20 minutes converted to 3D. Bearing in mind the end of the book has a massive battle scene it is likely to be really spectacular. I tried to book… but the local cinema doesn’t have details yet. Damn :(

Also in July the final book will be released. What will happen in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” is of course a complete secret… well mostly… but like most of those sucked into the world of magic and the ‘fight for good’ it’ll be *the* high point of the year. I’m sure J K Rowling will also be pleased when those millions start pouring into her swollen coffers.
Actually, for all the secrecy, I’m sure by now there are pirate copies circulating on the web… but I’m trying hard to resist searching for them… I’d rather get the full experience when the official release comes round… in 33 days or so… according to the widget I have ticking away on my desktop,
Can hardly wait. :)

Bored, tired, cold… too much to do and too little motivation :)

I think I need a holiday!

Winter demonstrated it has arrived over the past weeks by creating floods that killed a dozen people and caused a billion dollars worth of damage. Luckily for us, most of that happened to the north of Sydney in the areas around Newcastle and above.

The worst we’ve had, other than some heavy rain, has been a few frosty days. Yesterday the temperature when we got into the car to get the kids to school was hovering around 1ºC and the car windows were rimed by early frost. It’s very pretty but I could do without it. According to my weather widgets, it’s currently 7ºC in Sydney which I find hard to believe… maybe they are warmer because the city is close to the sea. In London the temperature is set around 20ºC but it’s raining. It iis after all summer in the UK so you’d expect it to rain :)

The wife was saying as we walked to the bus stop this morning that the relative coldness of winter is only here for a few weeks… 10 at most… and even then it only affects us because we are out very early. Sydney really has a very nice climate. True it gets quite humid sometimes in summer but it’s usually very pleasant. There are worse places to live.

Why was I not informed? Seems people around the world protested about the overuse of oil by the industrialised nations by stripping off and riding their bikes through various cities. They were naked in chilly London… they were naked in foggy Seattle… yet nobody got their kit off in sunny Sydney! How odd.

Naked Bike Riders This lady of quite ‘cuddly’ proportions was one of the riders and she seems quite unfazed by either the cold, the onlookers or anything else about the experience.

Well best of luck to her I say! I can’t honestly see myself doing anything similar. I doubt the police would be so tolerant of an unfit flabby feller fighting for breath while balancing badly on a broken bike.
There is a serious environmental and political message of course so if you’d like to see what it was all about have a look on the World Naked Bike Ride site for information regarding similar events in your city. Oh yes… if you decide to take part… please send pics?? :)

In Australia we have a fantastic series of ads running for Hahn beer… but one especially has been coming under fire for being sexist. In fact, Todd Harper of VicHealth is demanding it be taken off the air!

Beer Boobs

Hahn have responded by creating a new access point for their site… and damn funny it is too.

Apart from the response, the original ad is there too so if you want to see it feel free. :)

Downloaded this new port from Apple to test it out. Sadly it was a bit of a disaster since when it loaded all I got was a screen… some jpg’s… and no text nor ability to enter any… not even a url.

I went to the Apple support group and discovered I wasn’t alone. Seems the beta really hadn’t been tested anywhere near adequately enough before its release. Sad really since it might actually be a good competitor for Internet Explorer and FireFox. It is after all the browser of choice for the larger majority of Apple users who look for alternatives to Microsoft et al.

There were a few ideas about how it may be made to work. These ideas included copying the fonts to the Windows fonts directory and deleting the safari.resources directory then rebooting. Well I did that several times but it only worked when I did something else… trouble is I can’t quite remember what!! Either way even tho the text boxes worked well enough to let me post a bug report to Apple, the browser still refused to render properly a lot of the sites I visited. In the end I gave up.

Maybe the next release of the software will be an improvement but at this moment I wouldn’t suggest anyone try it… for this iteration of the software development cycle it really isn’t worth the effort .

Found a nice little 3-bedder with 7 acres just off Whites Ridge Road not far from here. Would mean the wife wouldn’t need to travel so far… it’s nearer the kids school… *but*… it looks a little too ‘woody’ from where I was looking so might be another of those ‘perched on a cliff’ type places.

Why so suspicious? There is a less attractive place not far away set on a half acre for the same price. Something wrong with one of them methinks :)
