Wow what a weekend. Spent the entire thing sitting in a chair reading Lord of the Rings… again. Couldn’t even summon up enough energy to write in here yesterday!

Youngest had to go to her skating lesson so I staggered out of bed at 6:30 a.m. after serious nagging from the wife who was exhausted and wanted a lie in. It was cold, wet and miserable… and boy did I not want to go!

The eldest was still recovering from her visit to the hospital so wasn’t going anywhere and it’s rained… and rained… and rained. We’ve had so much rain you could swear we were in Britain in summer!! We’ve had 100 mm or so over the fast few days.

Today I have to pull myself together cos the eldest has to get back to the dentist for a check-up. She seems ok now, swinging the lead if anything. :)

Still, can’t be too hard on her… yet :)

Anyway, I hope things lick up soon, I’m bored senseless.

Daughter came through ok. Spent until lunchtime in the hospital because the bleeding wouldn’t stop, but eventually she was allowed home :)

My baby in hospital!

Her face was really badly swollen so she’s been wearing an ice-pack most of the day… the one they gave us was pretty good. I might keep it in case it comes in handy!

The world at large seems to have decided I’m either not a ‘fit and proper person’, or that I have no peer group since in all my years I’ve never been called for jury duty! Come to think of it… I can’t say I even *know* anyone who’s been called for jury duty?

If you have been called, or have been on a jury… let me know what it’s like ok??

Just curious.

Slow down,you move to fast
You’ve gotta make the morning last…
etc…

Was driving home this morning from the hospital where I’d dropped off the wife and eldest daughter (who is having teeth removed you may recall?). We left the youngest is bed asleep so I had to come back to get her ready for school. Still I digress… as usual

I was driving home travelling at 80 kph or so, which is the speed limit hereabouts and noticed a sign at the side of the road. We’re living just a few miles from the site of the new town centre so roadworks etc are nothing new to us, not are these digital signs, some of which are vaguely useful flashing arrows or directions at us as we approach.

This one was odd in that despite my speed, it felt it necessary to tell me I was travelling just at 41 kph! The result was of course I took my eyes off the road a few times to check my speedometer and the sign to be sure I was reading it right and that the car hadn’t suddenly entered some weird ‘other dimensional space’ where speed was relatively relative not relatively absolute.

It struck me that this really wasn’t the idea behind the signs at all and that the intention was we slow us down if we were speeding. From my small observation I’d have said the sign simply increased the danger of accidents by distraction people with false information causing them to reduce their level of concentration at the worst possible time.

But… what do I know? :(

Lots going on today to remember that 30 years ago today Elvis died. Can’t say I ever liked him, can’t recall when he died and didn’t honestly care much when I heard.

Elvis

Is it so important that a mediocre singer like him be remembered this way?? Surely there were *far* better people to honour than him?

For a start there was Buddy Holly… this guy was writing and singing his own stuff when Elvis was warbling somewhere back of Phoenix. Where’re the calls for a Holly-Day in Buddy’s memory??

Hi ho, Hi ho, it’s off to Aldi we go… again. I like Aldi. They sell lots of odd stuff you don’t know you need until they advertise it… then I *have* to rush off and get it!! :)

Today’s delight is an 8.8 litre electric water urn which was on sale for $39.90. We had a good one a couple of years ago. Actually on one side it heated water, and on the other it cooled it… lasted two years but it eventually died on us and as it’s impossible to get anyone to fix anything any more, out it went :(

I bought a water cooler a couple of weeks ago… from Aldi… and this now supplies us with constant boiling water for tea etc… which being British born we drink loads of.

The only real problem is the size of it. It’s nice to have 8 litres of water heated… but what the hell will we use it for?? The old one only boiled two cups… but I figure we can use it for boiling spuds or veg etc… or something… maybe?

Oh yes, we also now possess a load of cheapish toys for Xmas pressies for kids – ours or someone else’s… who cares… they were cheap :) I bought another Lazy Susan, god knows why, and a folding walking cane of which you can never have enough!! Ahh… and an onion chopper… I know they don’t work but I travel in hope of finding one that does sometime.

For next weeks offerings… go to the Aldi Australia site… oooh… I like the exercise equipment!! Xmas lights!! A neat door mat!! Ooohh… will *have* to go next week!!

The eldest daughter is off to the hospital tomorrow. She needs lots of teeth out. Not because she doesn’t look after them, though she doesn’t, more because of ‘something’ that happened either before she was born, or when she was very young. Apparently at some early age she was affected either by a virus or maybe antibiotics the wife took when carrying her (who knows really?) and it affected the enamel of her teeth… despite them not even being there at the time.

Don’t ask me the mechanics of it all, I just know that a few years ago we were told her back teeth were disintegrating and so she needed them capped with metal covers to protect them.

Time moved on and now her permanent teeth are waiting to grow but can’t push their way past the caps… so caps and old teeth have to come out.

Seems to do this requires a general anaesthetic and that’s where she’ll be at 5:30 a.m. tomorrow morning. Why so early? No idea… we just do what we’re told. Maybe the consultant orthodontist has a busy day planned… we didn’t ask :)

Either way… please wish her well for tomorrow morning. All being well I’ll be back here as usual tomorrow arvo complaining about something or other… much as usual. Fingers crossed anyway.

Out in the depths of darkest Hungary, at the bottom of an open cast coal mine, the remains of an ancient forest have been uncovered. How many trees were originally preserved is unknown, but scientists have determined there are 16 specimens left for them to study.

8,000,000 year old trees

The eight million year old ‘stumps’ are 2 – 3 metres in diameter and are up to 6 metres high! They were even reported as still being brown in colour when uncovered. The race is on now to preserve them in situ after one crumbled when an attempt was made to move it.

Sort of puts our minuscule time on earth into perspective really. These things were buried before we began to turn into apes let alone humans!

I thought I’d do what lots of people seem to do these days… ‘Google’ my own name, or in this instance my image… and guess what??

Yup – I found a picture of myself stored for posterity. It *is* me alright, I have a copy on the wall behind me. I’m slightly thinner, not wearing glasses, and have several kids (crazy daughters and grandson) and dogs nearby… but it *is* me.

Wow… true fame at last! :)

You want to see? You’ll have to look… it’s about 10 pages in iirc.

Oh ok… here it is:

Me

Little Bendy Bindi Irwin is at it again! Less than a week away from the first anniversary of her fathers death she has been out in Los Angeles flogging her new line in fashion wear called “Bindi Wear International”. Not sure how you think about it, but for me all I can say is that much as we love this kid… it seems a little over the top even for her.

Bendy Bindi Irwin

Clearly she has a huge marketable quality and her minders can be excused for their eagerness. After all, fame *does* die quickly these days as people move on to the latest celebrity. But it seems as if they are trying to squeeze as much mileage out of her as possible before the steam runs out of the affection train and the dollars stop rolling in.

Yes we realise she needs to secure her future and if possible the aspirations of her and her family to continue Steve’s work, especially with regard to Australia Zoo, but if it’s at the cost of her childhood wouldn’t that be too high a price to pay? Look around at people ranging from the Olson Twins to Lindsay Lohan… do we really want to see little Bindi go that way?

Nothing to do with me I suppose but it’d still make me sad to see so much long term potential being wasted for short term gains.
