We finally got the results of the ‘educational tests’ the eldest daughter took in school in September. These are the ‘guides’ the school uses to sort the students into ‘streams’ and classes.

The four areas they tested were ‘Maths’, ‘Reading’, Spelling’, and ‘Written Expression’.

In ‘Maths’ and  ‘Written Expression’ she rated above ‘Average’. In ‘Reading’ and ‘Spelling’ she rated ‘Highly Developed’

What is nice about this isn’t just that she is as clever as we thought… but that she was able to demonstrate it! Of course we *still* think she could have done *far* better in Maths than she did and so the wife is sitting on her shoulders each night forcing her to revise and work harder at studying relevant areas in preparation for starting High School (next January).

By the way the rating ‘Above Average’ is only given to the top 19% of students; and the rating ‘Highly Developed’ only to the top 4%.

The girl did good!! :D

There I was rushing about this morning to get the kids off to school. I’d booked the car in for 9:00 a.m. for it’s 48,000 k service and wanted to get in and out quickly.

Kids were dropped off and I zoomed away. I made good time despite it being early in the morning and got to the service station at 8:30 a.m. Whoohoo!!

I pull into the reception area and up walks an agent. We exchange pleasantries… I pass the keys over noting there was a nice little cafe attached and decided it would be a good place to wait. I asked how long it would take expecting an answer of an hour or two.

“Ooohh…” says he… “should be completed at about 4:00 p.m.”. After I picked my jaw up off the ground I asked him to repeat it. He says “Well it *is* a major service. It needs to be examined from one end to the other”.Oh joy. I was expecting to be able to get back to take the kids to their guitar and singing lessons… but it was not to be.

Luckily this particular service station is a twenty minute walk from Penrith town centre, so despite the drizzle, and the pain in my knee and hip… I went walking… and walking… and walking.

I walked to the town, I walked round the shops, I walked up, walked down, walked around… and then go a phone call from the Service station telling me that Leaseplan (who are financing the purchase and ‘taking care of’ little things like maintenance, insurance and rego) say they’ve never heard of the car despite them having authorised services for the past year or so. I tell them to check again… and contact the wife who sets the ball rolling to get the company to sort out the issue… and I again start walking, this time back to the service station just in case there is a *real* issue that needs to be sorted.

I arrive at 2:00 p.m…. the ‘problem’ was that the agent had given the lease company the rego numbers in reverse…!! I kid you not!! Once he passed them on in the right order all was well… except he didn’t bother to call me to *tell* me that! Does this mean they will speed up the service? Nope. I still had to wait… for two more hours.

Eventually it was completed… and to be fair the car is in much better nick mechanically than it was and I’m quite happy to go there again… except I wish I’d asked how long it would be *before* I drove merrily into the glue :)

Been moving along slowly. The car is cleaner than it was… but now I have a big box of rubbish to work through sorting out what to keep and what to sling out.

Started in the study… which is to be turned into a bedroom for my two kids pro tem. Also made a start in the oldies bedroom since it looks like won’t be coming (though we *still* hold out hope they’ll have a last minute change of heart and come over to suprise us).

We think we’ll just move everything back to where it used to be for Xmas before they started to come over but leave all the drawers etc down there… just in case. That means it’ll only be a five minute job to change it back to a bedroom if they *do* arrive after all! :)

So basically the dining table is moved up to the centre of the room to allow us to use it for piling food on on Xmas Day. This gives is a fair sized patch at the window end of the room for the tree, and any presents Santa might leave… won’t be many from us either way as we’re stony broke. No change there of course. There are still a few ‘comfy chairs’ in there so we can sit down… and of course there are the eight chairs that make up the dining suite so there’s more than enough… so long as *I* get one of the comfy chairs :D

I hate blood tests. I think I’m allergic to pain :) This time I’m not even sure what they were for, though I’m sure Stephen Parsons does. Results in a week or two when I go back to see him… in the meantime… plodding on with ‘stuff’.

About to clear out the car so it’s ready for it’s service tomorrow morning. Already filled with petrol so all I need do is drop the kids off and zoom away.

It’s hard to believe a car could become *so* messy with just the kids in it… but in the past I’ve taken 6 carrier bags full of rubbish out of the car and while this time it isn’t as bad, it ain’t good! Why they seem to think it’s ok to just dump stuff on the floor is beyond me. It’s not for the want of telling!

Grrr…..

Today I’d intended to spend all day working on the inside of the house starting to clean in ready for the arrival of the rellies. Unfortunately things never go exactly as planned and I have to go for a blood test first. This one requires ‘fasting’ for 12 hours so right now I’m really hungry. I don’t eat much to start with so eating nothing isn’t an ideal situation for me to be in. :)

No idea right now if this is a single test or if it’s one of those ‘test/drink sugar/test’ type sessions. If it’s the latter, I could be there all morning!

Either way I’ll not be at the gym today. Won’t be there tomorrow either. I booked the car in for an overdue service in Penrith at 9:00 a.m. and it’s a *long* way from the school to Penrith. I’ll just have to hope the traffic isn’t too bad.

Friday… nothing as far as I can tell so far. No doubt the wife will tell me if anything is booked in that I’ve forgotten. Maybe *Friday* will be the day to clear up… followed by even more sorting etc over the weekend!! :)

Next week I booked the eldest daughter in for an ultrasound and now I can’t remember if it was for Weds or Thurs morn at 8:30 a.m…. will have to call to check.

Well inside is a tip. Outside is looking a little better… as it should be after the time I’ve spent out there! I had to mow the lawns again yesterday despite having only mowed it last weekend! Seems bizarre really… you feed and water it, then cut it short. May just as well leave it in peace and never cut it at all!

Also spread a general fertiliser over the garden beds and pots and had to water it all down. It looks ok as far as I’ve gone but the big bed on the left of the house (as you look at it) is still a mess. I decided it needs replanting so after Xmas will go looking for bushes rather than bedding plants and just fill it up.

Something that produces lots of colour through the summer would be nice so I’ll have to look in the garden centres to see what suits our locality.

Not yet though.. loads to do *inside* as well!

Up to the Guide Hut early yesterday morning to do more watering of the turf. I realised when I’d finished that the hut isn’t inside the recycling are so was subject to water restrictions. This meant getting there much earlier.

Had spent an hour and a half there pouring water in all directions when a council tanker arrived in the car park. Had a chat and it turned out he wad come to water down the plants that were part of the councils roadworks/renovations happening all round that area. He asked how long I’d been there he looked surprised and said he’d finish it off for me. He hopped back in his truck and pointed it towards to turf alongside the hut.

In a minute or less he’d poured hundreds of litres over it from a directable nozzle at the front! I’d have been there another hour or more. Very handy tool that!! :)

The hordes will be descending upon us soon. The first contingent of the UK mob will be arriving on the 27th so the coming weekend will be the last chance to make some sort of impression on the mess. Of course we have no *time* free over the weekend to do anything… so lord knows how it’ll get done.

Still… 7 more days and we’ll all have to muck in… or get snowed under. :)

The daughter has her ‘Year 6 Formal’ coming up. To me this seems like a blatant money grab by the school. There isn’t a ‘dance’ for them… just an evening out with their parents – seriously! What’s worse is that the cost is $85 per parent and $45 for the child. So just to go and eat somewhere… with people I hardly know… is going to cost us $210! Of course to this you have to add the cost of a ‘special frock’ for the daughter… and something for the wife and I to wear as well. I need a ‘lounge suit’ because I just don’t have one. However… I’m losing weight so anything I buy may well only be worn once or twice before I need to buy new again!!

Also you will remember (since I ramble on about it ad nauseum), I’m on a strict diet so I had to ask that *my* meal be low carb, low fat, low sodium. In practice this usually translates as salad or steamed veg. So this evening out is likely to be for me at least a bit of an expensive and somewhat pointless affair!

A lot of Saturday was spent out in the garden. I finished strimming the edges of the lawns front and back and mowed. Spread lawn fertiliser over them and watered it in. Yesterday was *also* spent in the garden. The wife went out with the kids firstly to shop, and then to drop them off at parties! Nice for some.

I just got on with the weeding. I filled the garden waste bin very quickly… and then several large carrier bags… and made very little impression on the place at all! It’s amazing just how much of this garden is plain weed!! :)

At some stage I’ll have to try to find a clover specific weedkiller. Most people (here at least) seem to hate clover, especially when it infests their lawns. Personally, I love clover… and when it’s in a lawn I have no problems with it at all. It attracts bees and makes the place feel as if we’re in the countryside, yet when clover gets into a bed it’s a ferocious opponent! It twists, twines and infiltrates garden beds, insinuating itself between and around the bedding plants creating an inextricable mass of stems. leaves and flowers that make it easier and quicker to pull the entire lot out and replant than to waste hours or days sort out ‘good’ plants from the rest!!

In the end I was forced to abandon the task because we had to go to more rehearsals for the Xmas Ice Show. It was time to stop anyway, I’d managed to scratch myself somehow on one (or more) of the plants and my arms and left leg had erupted in red angry welts. There was probably some allergic reaction in there as well so I took antihistamine as well just in case. The welts are still there today and still painful so maybe another dose is in order?

Today of course the gym calls… but so does the turf outside the Guide Hut. When I’m finished torturing myself I’ll have to take a turn over there and make sure it’s wetted down again… and then… more weeding here?

I’m in a bit of a quandary over that. Right now I have nowhere to put the weeds once they’ve been pulled… but if I leave them til Thursday when the bins are emptied, they’ve just continue to take over. Maybe I’ll just fill the garbage bin up with them as well… or maybe I’ll just spray weedkiller over the entire bed and wait for it all to die off :)

I know which is the easier approach! :)
