The wife’s niece has now confirmed she and *her* husband will be arriving mid-December to stay with us as well. This will be an interesting Xmas. No idea how long they’ll be with us yet… but like I said most people seem to want to stay so it could be weeks or months. :)

This pair though have work visas so will probably be moving into their own accommodation close to work fairly quickly (once they find both). We’re a bit old and miserable for two young newly married people but as with all other visitors… they’re welcome to stay as long as they need to so long as they don’t wreck our ‘laid back’ (i.e. messy) lifestyle. :D

I think I mentioned I’ve only met the niece once since she grew up… though she *was* at our wedding with her mother… one of the very few who can claim that distinction (being at the wedding I mean not being with her mother)!! :) I’ve not met her husband at all… and I’m not even sure what his name is yet which will make it interesting when we meet up at the airport. On a theme… not sure how that will work yet either. Needs working on… but I think the wife will need to ‘work from home’ that day so she can be there to ‘meet and greet’ *and* then be here to help them integrate into a household which will (by then) consist of a family of four adult and five kids.

Lordy… Xmas will be something to remember this year!!!

In ten days the eldest, eldest daughter will be arriving with the family for and 8 week stay. The house is in turmoil as you’d imagine and we’re trying to cope with the existing chaos by adding to it as we move furniture etc around.

We’re all really looking forward to her coming. We’ve not seen the two eldest kids for a couple of years… never seen the baby… and never met her husband! It’s all quite exciting!!:D

I hope they all enjoy their stay… nearly everyone who’s come out here has loved the place, had a magical time and gone back wanting to migrate!!

Be great if they did migrate… but you have to jump through all sorts of hoops to get the nod and not everyone is allowed in. We can hope though… !

A main effect of the little white pills is elevated metabolism… and enhanced wakefulness which is why I take them. The downside of the pills is that in the begginning they *do* tend to keep me awake at night. Not that I’m complaining as such, even though I’m sort of sleepy… I’m just not sleeping.  It wears off in a week or so and my patterns will be back to normal, I just woke every hour all through the night until I got up at 6:00 a.m. to let the dogs out.

I was commenting in the other blog how much I’ve come to rely on the Modafinil that Stephen Parsons (the ‘diet doctor’) prescribed for me some months ago.

A week or so ago I ran out of little white pills and whilst I *could* have got a repeat prescription from my local GP, I thought I’d wait until I saw Stephen again first. Not because I didn’t think I needed them, but more to see what I would be like when the effects wore off. I don’t like *having* to take medication so occasionally I ‘go off it’ in order to check it’s still required.

Without being overly dramatic my subjective experience is that this drug is *essential* for me to be able to lead a normal life! However, I still have no idea how it does what it does… all I know is that it does it!

It clearly affects my both my mental processes *and* my metabolism. Over the last two weeks I’ve lost next to no weight… maybe a kilo or so. I slowed up both mentally and physically finding it hard to articulate concepts and even form coherent sentences! For example I kept ‘losing’ words mid-sentence!

That it has such an obvious effect on my quality of life is both reassuring and (paradoxically) worrying. It’s reassuring to know I can function at a higher cognitive level with the help of the drug, and that I can maintain a clear head throughout the day in contrast to my usual lethargic performance from mid-day onwards. However, it’s a concern that I am probably going to have to rely on this drug for the forseeable future in order to maintain this level of ability.

What might be more of a concern is what long term effects there might be. Are the effects of the drug cumulative such that eventually my brain builds up resistance to them? Will there be any effect related to more rapid onset of age related issues such as dementia? Currently I don’t know, and I don’t think the drug companies know either. I’ve made sporadic attempts to find information on the effects but most of the reports I’ve found have been positive. Nothing I’ve seen so far addresses the potential problems, if any, that might eventuate through long term usage.

The bottom line is that it *does* make me concerned that whilst not addictive in the usual sense, i.e. I felt no withdrawal effects whatever whilst not taking them, I *am* now reliant on these things in order to function mentally at an optimum level. Can’t win really.

Edit:
Here’s an interesting perspective from a user on the issues surrounding the drug. http://www.erowid.org/experiences/exp.php?ID=63472

Yet again chaos loomed over The Dog’s household today when at 1:15 p.m. he took a call from the eldest daughter informing him that she’d like him to come to her school to watch her perform in a lunchtime concert. She was playing her flute solo, and in the Junior Flute Ensemble.

Seems like a reasonable request, if it hadn’t been that the concert was at 1:30 p.m. and The Dog wasn’t showered, washed, or shaved after the mornings sweat-fest in the gym.

Still, having missed almost *all* the schooling of my first ‘eldest daughter’ back in the UK I feel honour bound to try to be there for this one… so ran round the house changing clothes, shaving, and spraying deodorant in all sorts of unlikely places until I was able to run out of the door with the video camera at the ready.

I go surging up to the school breaking all sorts of road rules and get there *just* in time for her to play. Nice I thought – so did she. :)

Since I was up there until almost 2:00 p.m. I thought it wise to wait there until 3:00 pm. when school breaks up because the youngest has guitar lessons on Thurs, and the eldest has singing lessons. This way I’d get there on time for a change.

Another great idea bit the dust when I realised there was no guitar in the car.

Off home I zoom. I get there, put guitar in the case along with the music books then realizing there were a few minutes spare and the tomatoes were wilting, I may as well do some watering.

Thirty minutes later I realize (again) that time is running short so turn off the water, push the dogs outside, lock the house, get in the car and race off.

Did you notice the mistake? I did just after I picked up the kids and the youngest asked where her guitar was!!!

Zoom, zoom back to the house, pick up guitar, zoom, zoom over to the music school where we arrive and park with two minutes to spare.

The experience was such that I decided to hell with cooking… and on the way home I bought a cooked chicken and some chips for the kids. This was in part because  the wife has gone off to get her hair done so would be late home.

The wife just rang to say she was on the usual bus and would be home at the usual time… I could scream.

Oh lord – kids are due at Tae-Kwon-Do in three minutes… time to zoom, zoom again!

I’ve not actually tried this yet… but I can almost *taste* it already. I think it will make quite a pleasant meal. For myself (to maintain the diet) I might substitute almonds for the peanuts, although that would change the flavour substantially from it’s essentially ‘Indonesian’ roots to something quite different. After all, by leaving out the avocado and adding coconut milk the salsa could almost be a Laksa!! :)

Either way I think this will be on the menu over the weekend. It’s quite cheap… and easy to make.

Coriander, peanut and avocado salsa with chicken

Ingredients:
4 sm chicken breasts
1 garlic clove, thinly sliced
1 tbsp fish sauce
2 sm red chillies, finely chopped
1 tbsp peanut oil
1 cup unsalted peanuts, coarsely chopped
1 cup coarsely chopped coriander
1 avocado, diced finely
½ red onion, very finely diced
Juice of 1 juicy lime (approx 1/3 cup)

Coriander, Peanut, Avocado, Peanut Chicken
Method:
Slice chicken breast in half horizontally and place in large bowl. Add the garlic; half of the fish sauce; and half of the chilli and oil.

Leave to marinate for as long as possible (overnight in fridge preferably).

Roast peanuts on baking tray in preheated oven 180ºC for 7 mins or until golden brown and fragrant – cool 5 mins and chop finely.

Combine chopped peanuts, coriander, avocado, onion, lime juice, remaining chilli and remaining fish sauce in a medium bowl.

Place a large frying pan over a medium heat. Cook chicken pieces til golden brown on *both* sides and just cooked through.

Serve 2 pieces of chicken with peanut and coriander salsa either with steamed potatoes or jasmine rice, or steamed veg if on low carb diet..

As you see in the comments, the sister kindly passed on a url with “15 Things to do with Rosemary” so I had a butchers hook and saw most are suggestions for use with food… as you’d expect… but you’d have to use it pretty sparingly for some ideas. It’s such a strong flavoured herb it could well overpower anything less robust.

As is my way I eventually went looking myself and found a couple of interesting sites with information about Rosemary and its uses. For example, Demesne tells us
clothes dried over a Rosemary bush help repel moths… and it is useful in warding off plague. So that’s useful to know! :)

Maybe the best idea comes from The Herb Spiral which suggests sprinkling it in your bath for a wonderful relaxing recuperative experience. So… we have the Rosemary… we have lots of hot water… all I need is a bath. Can’t see if having the same effect in the shower somehow.

I wonder if I sprinkled it in the swimming pool or spa would it have the same effect??:D

Obviously chucking handfuls of Rosemary over your lamb is a way of using up some… but I have *buckets* of it!

Our Rosemary Bush

Thing is what *else* can I do with it?? The damn thing is taking over the garden! Yes it’s pretty… sort of… but it’s so big… and so… useless!

Any ideas to what useful purpose I can put the leaves… or any other part? :D

I knocked up yet another blog site yesterday. Not for me but for my trainer Sally who has boon looking after me so I’m returning the favour.

The look of the place is ok, but it’s odd. Despite them all being different… they’ve all started looking the same. I’ve been looking for a ‘fitness’ related theme for hers but so far can’t locate one that’s good enough. Yes I can make one up but I’m not as experienced as some so I tend to restrict myself to adjusting things like images and text placements etc.

If you want a look you can find it at Fitness Recruiter Blog and see what you think.

I got fed up being kept out of the kitchen so had a rummage round to see what I could knock up quickly and more or less within the diet rules.

Sliced some chicken, made a simple marinade from cumin and olive oil, tossed it about a bit… and left it in the fridge for an hour or so.

Cooked/blanched some broad beans and two bunches of asparagus (sliced into 2 – 3 inch lengths). Peeled the broad beans, threw them in a bowl with the asparagus, 200 grams of halved cherry tomatoes, a handful of Parmesan, couple of teaspoons extra virgin olive oil *and* a ¼ cup of fresh basil.

Dusted with coarse ground black pepper and salt and stuck it in the fridge after ‘testing’. Tastes pretty good so far!! :)

Ok the Parmesan and olive oil might be a bit on the edge but what the hell – it’s only once!

Chicken is cooking slowly in a covered dish in the oven at 180ºC… will leave it 40 mins and serve. Will serve it on a bed of mixed salad leaves when the wife comes home… and no doubt wolf it down!!

Edit:
The salad was very nice actually… but overall the meal would have been better had I remembered to knock up some salsa verde (or similar) to go along with the chicken. Damn… even a standard pesto would have done!! Still… it wasn’t too bad really :)
