So here we are again after the long summer break raring to go with a load of topics to discuss. Yet what a place to begin. With the possibility of 300 or more people dead in the worst bush-fires Australia has seen hanging over us it’s hard to restart the blog with anything positive.

That we’d suffered a national tragedy is without question a truism. Despite the deaths being limited to a relatively small area, there are few of us who don’t have some personal knowledge or links to those who died, even if there are two or three degrees of separation.

For my part there are people on the Australian Opinion forum who have friends and colleagues missing, and the company the wife is employed by has people still missing. Sadly, the term ‘missing’ is somewhat of a euphemism since all on the list are almost certainly dead. True there may be minor miracles such as Dorothy Barker’s who somehow survived her house burning down by managing to crawl under her stairs into a tiny space just before roof collapsed, but for most… there was no safe place.

One of the worst aspects is that some of the dead may *never* be identified because there is nothing of them left to be found. The fires were so intense they were effectively cremated. If their remains included jewellery etc then circumstantial evidence may be used as identification, but others will have simple disappeared.

Clearly there is far more to write on this subject, but this initial post is simply to say we’re back and writing again.

Before you ask, I live outside Sydney and whilst at one end of the country floods have ravaged and killed, and at the others fires have ravaged and killed… here we are an island of calm. Yes it was hot for a day or two but we’ve had sufficient rain locally to negate any possibility of bush-fires… for now. The trees are lush, the lawns green and there is wildlife everywhere. Sometimes it’s hard to believe we’re in the same country.

We’re a scruffy bunch here sometimes. For example, I like a bit of ‘wildness’ in the garden and so apart from throwing handfuls of slug pellets out now and then I tend not to do much in the way of pest control. Likewise I do *very* little pruning in some areas.

Once such area is the far right of the property (as you view from the street). Over the past 9 years the vegetation has grown slowly and now forms what, to my mind at least is quite an attractive little area, as you might agree from the photo.

Naturally it look better in real life, and in a larger photo come to that, but I hope this gives you an idea anyway.

So why am I telling you all this?

Well as you can tell from the photo, the far end of the garden has formed a natural arch which does rather cause difficulties for anyone trying to walk along this side of the road. This state of affairs is soon to be resolved however because the local council has taken it upon them selves to ‘prune’ all the trees on the estate to make it ‘safer for pedestrians and improves vehicular access’.

In other words they are about to hack our beautiful little ‘wild area’ to pieces.

I’ve taken this photo and a few others to remind me what it looked like before the butchers have had their evil way with the vegetation and I’ll publish a few ‘before and after shots’ so you can see if it *is* an improvement… or if it truly *has* ruined what I thought was a very pretty little corner.

This utility is such a ‘must have’ I rarely remember to tell anyone about it! Sounds silly I know but it’s *so* useful, essential even, that I honestly forget that it isn’t a part of the basic operating system!

The thing is called ‘WordWeb‘ and it sits quietly in your taskbar until there is a word you simply *must* know everything about… from spelling to usage! It has two great features – firstly it’s free… secondly it *works*! From writers, through office workers to schoolkids this is the sort of aid you’d expect to be inbuilt to any program that accepts written input. You can even install it onto a usb drive!!

To use it is simplicity itself. Simply highlight a word and click on the icon! Up comes a window similar to the screenshot above (re-sizeable to suit your needs). If you want to change spelling click on the word… else… do whatever.

While you look at the thing… check out the wacky ‘licence conditions‘… !! These people want to save the planet as well!!  :D

The baby humpback whale found stranded and motherless in Sydney Harbour, and named Colin… later Colette, was finally ‘euthanased’ in Sydney Harbour yesterday.

There’ve been all sorts of stories about her and the way she was/wasn’t aided by government agencies etc and there is now talk of a *summit* of experts to try to establish guidelines for procedures in the event this happens again.

Wonderful sentiments.

I wonder how many of these experts weeping over the sad loss of this baby whale went off home to eat steak, veal cutlets, sushi and the like? The hypocrisy involved in our relationship with animals is utterly amazing sometimes and you have to wonder just why people can’t see the irony in our behaviour, We desperately seek to succour and maintain the life of one *wild* animal who is following the natural course of it’s life whilst concurrently imprisoning and killing untold millions of other animals helpless to protect themselves or their offspring from our predation?

I wonder when we’ll see a summit of ‘experts’ gathering to establish guidelines for the abolition of meat in our diets?

Yes there’s a real paradox in the way we eat meat, yet feel desperately sorry for the way this animal was treated, but surely things are getting out of hand when we spend millions of dollars protecting *one* animal whilst spending far more millions killing others!!

The miniscule Wildlife Warrior and merchandising machine known as Bindi Irwin will be ten years old in a few days (July 24th). The development of her fan base in the wake of father Steve’s death has launched her into ‘superstar’ status. In fact, her fame has grown to the extent that the ‘Bindi Irwin’ name is quite possibly currently the most well known of any child on the planet!

There are signs that merchandising her name might propel her into the same earning league as the Olsen twins, but with the huge difference that Bindi is becoming well known as a child with a purpose. Whereas all other child stars are famous for being famous, Bindi, even at 10 years old has her fame grounded in a worthwhile cause. She is after all the undisputed queen of the mini-conservationists, pushing hard to bring the problems human society causes wildlife to the front pages of the world media. To be fair to Bindi herself, to mum Terri, and to Australia Zoo, as much as Bindi herself is being ‘marketed’, the underlying message is still heard loud and clear. Without serious ongoing intervention the next 50 years could see the extinction of 90% of ‘wildlife’ on the planet.

So the circus surrounding her upcoming ‘birthday party’ at Australia Zoo can be excused because whilst it *will* increase her personal fortune, increase her market ‘visibility’, and of course enhance the takings at the zoo… it will bring back to the forefront the message that all wildlife on the planet is interdependent and we continue to lose diversity at our own peril.

Look past the tacky merchandising and you’ll see a 10 year old girl with an ongoing mission to save the planet. It’s a lot to dump on the shoulders of one little girl, but she’s doing her bit just the same, and keeping her huge trademark grin while she’s about it.

Good onya Bindi… and Happy Birthday. Steve would still be very proud of you.

Dropped into the petrol station this morning to fill up ready for the weekend and as you can see from the picture, it cost me AU$107.63 in total.

Petrol Prices June 2008 - AustraliaI commented on the price to a friend and said we only paid 68c a litre when we arrived here. She told me back in 1971 she could fill her car for 17c a litre!! She recalled filling the tank of her Honda 90 for 20c!! :)

Of course since then world demand for oil has escalated and Middle Eastern oil producers flexed their muscles after realising how the Western world was exploiting their resources.

It can’t last of course. For years people have been claiming the resources are finite and will soon be used up, yet until the recent explosion of affluence in China, there has never been any real sign of it happening, and there is now a real fear it will happen sooner rather than later. Yes there are unexplored oil fields to be
exploited but common sense tells us that even these will be used, and soon!

The answer? Well one would be to start producing oil from crops… but as this increases, so world food production has decreased with the result that basic necessities has risen dramatically in price leaving millions in danger of starvation. The obvious alternative is to reduce dependence on oil, but this is proving harder than you’d think… despite rapidly increasing costs to consumers!

Perhaps the best long term answer would be to shift to renewable resources such as utilising solar energy, but research into sustainable energy sources isn’t being seriously followed up by the largest oil consuming countries.

If we’re to maintain our current standards of living into the next centuries then people need to act now… if it isn’t already too late. Our limited oil reserves should be put to more important uses than moving small numbers of people around the planet, consumption needs to be curtailed and soon, but the only way to do this is to provide an alternative that isn’t being seriously looked for. Meanwhile we bury our heads in the sand and wait for a miracle.

Story here culled from from news.com about a new type of washing machine (called Xeros?) developed in the UK that uses just one cup of water, yet cleans a full wash and leaves the clothes virtually dry. Seems instead of all that water, the machine uses the cupful to loosen the dirt, then 20 kilos of plastic chips absorb and remove it leaving the clothes fresh and clean.

Well ok the chips can be used a 100 times, the machine uses far less water and energy than the usual machines, and yet… whilst it all sounds good in theory, I’m wondering how much water and energy are actually going to be saved in total.

For example, how much energy and water will be used to create the chips? And 20 kilos is one hell of a lot of plastic to be using for just 100 cycles of a washing machine!

In our house for example, the wife handles the washing and does uses at least 6 – 10 full loads a week. This means we’d need to buy a new load of ‘chips’ every couple of months, and that depends on how dirty the clothes get. The dirtier they are, the fewer times you can use them.

So if this technology took off, instead of using billions of litres of a renewable and recyclable element like water… we could end up using untold millions of tonnes of plastics with god only knows what effects on the environment. Multiply the 20 kilos with just the 30,000,000 dwellings in the UK and you begin to see the *massive* disposal issues that could arise if it was adopted.

Can these things be recycled? If so, how much does it cost to do that and will that use more energy and water than using the old fashioned machines to begin with?

Seems like ‘progress’ for the sake of progress to me and hang the consequences. Maybe we should all get back to the river and start bashing our clothes with rocks again??

Pity this poor couple on May 12th 2008. The girl in the wedding dress has just been married, she steps outside the church to have her photo taken by Wang Qiang and as he takes the snaps there is a distant rumble…

Chinese Earthquake Wedding… the distant rumble gets closer then stones fall of the church and the entire gathering is enveloped in a cloud of dust as the earthquake hits and buildings topple around them.

Luckily for them. nobody in the wedding party was injured or hurt, but if nothing else this bride had the sort of day one can truly call ‘interesting’ in the Chinese sense of the word!!

Amazing shots.

Please sign the Save Steve’s Place petition and stop the miners wrecking this wildlife preserve!!

If we can do it we need to act now… every vote counts. Please send this to all your friends asap!!!

The sister just sent be a picture of a woodpecker sitting on her bird table. Ntp sure if she’s going to upload it to the gallery so I’ve reproduced it here.

Woodpecker in WalesIt’s a little fuzzy because she shot it though a window quickly to catch it before it flew away, but it’s clear what it is anyway.

Actually, even allowing for the fuzziness, it’s a nice shot of the bird table with the flower baskets around it. Is that pretty or what?? :)

It’s winter here and I forget how nice the UK can look in summer… and it isn’t far from summer over there now! Don’t blink tho, you might miss it!

Talking of ‘shooting’ reminded me that when I was a callow youth and knowing no better I used to wander about with a gun shooting anything that moved and one day blasted a Blue Jay out of the sky simply because I thought its wings were really pretty and wanted to take them home.

The idea that perhaps the Jay itself might have preferred to keep it’s wings to itself never entered my head. Nor did the possibility that by killing it I was preventing it from breeding and producing *more* beautiful things to look at.

In retrospect it was a dreadful thing to do and I’m pleased that both I and a large chunk of the population have woken up to the fact that nature is best left alive and unspoiled. Now if we can just persuade ‘business’ that this is the way to go maybe more woodpeckers and Jay’s will live on to delight us and our children’s children. We can live in hope.
